5. NWA 12691 — LUNAR PARTIAL SLICE WITH GIANT ANORTHSITE INCLUSION

The Moon – lunar feldspathic breccia
Sahara Desert, Mauritania
Found 2017 / TKW: 103.8 kg

Among the rarest substances on Earth, every single bit of the Moon on Earth could fit in the back of a large SUV. Moon rocks are identified by their textural, mineralogical, chemical, and isotopic signatures. The classic character of a feldspathic lunar breccia is seen in this example: white anorthite suspended in a charcoal lunar regolith “cemented’ together as part of a melt that solidified. The brecciation is the result of the ongoing bombardment of the Moon’s surface by asteroid impacts prior to the collision responsible for launching this Moon rock to Earth. This specimen is all about the unusually large anorthite clast which measures two inches (50 mm) across.

55 x 78 x 3mm (2 x 3 x 0.1 in.) and 41.8 grams
