4. BEAVER — PARTIAL SLICE OF THE ORIGINAL JAILHOUSE ROCK
L5
Beaver, Beaver County, Oklahoma (36°48'N., 100°32'W)
Found 1940 / TKW: 25.62 kg
A single stone was found reportedly in 1940 and used as a doorstop in the Beaver County Jail for the next forty years before being recognized as a meteorite by Jim Wescott. Wescott was informed he could acquire the meteorite if he found a replacement for the doorstop, and a slab of concrete and meteorite soon exchanged hands. (As was pointed out by Dr. Chris Sanders, Wescott had an easier time acquiring the meteorite as he was not a resident in the jail at the time.) This specimen is from the collection of Professor Heinz Winbeck. The catalog number “W5-22-5” is seen on the specimen’s cut face and this lot is accompanied by an original catalog card. Winbeck was a German composer of five major symphonies. As a professor of music composition, he also taught a number of students who have since enjoyed notable classical music careers.
9 x 38 x 5mm (3.5 x 1.5 x 0.2 in.) and 72.3 grams.
