6. ESTHERVILLE END PIECE — THE ONLY A3/4 MESOSIDERITE
MES – A3/4
Emmet County, Iowa (43°25'N 94°50'W)
Fell May 10, 1879 / TKW: 320 kg
Following a brilliant fireball and sonic detonations on the afternoon of May 10, 1879, the Estherville meteorite shower pelted Iowa farmland just ten miles from the Minnesota border. It was reported that multiple windows broke as a result of the accompanying shock waves. Mesosiderites represent just 0.4% of all meteorites and only 7 — just 1.7% of all mesosiderites — are witnessed falls. Not only is Estherville the only North American mesosiderite fall, it’s is the only A3/4 mesosiderite known. From what is among the most famous 19th Century American meteorite falls, this fine representative end piece is inscribed with a catalog number which starts with a “5” or “S” but is otherwise indistinguishable.
