41. UDEI STATION — PARTIAL SLICE OF IAB UNGROUPED FALL WITH TWO EDGES OF NATURAL EXTERIOR SURFACE

IAB-ung
Benue River, Nigeria (7° 57' N, 8° 05' E.)
Fell Spring 1927 / TKW: 103 kg

Udei Station is a classic example of a silicated iron meteorite. While considered irons, many examples in this sub-class are so filled with silicate and other inclusions that they more closely resemble their stony-iron cousins (whose elaborate, highly aesthetic appearance they often share). In fact, Udei Station was initially classified as a mesosiderite, and only more recently has been reclassified.  There are only three IAB ungrouped witnessed falls and Udei Station is one of them. In addition to its beautiful etch, its huge dark clasts dotting a gleaming metallic face resembles a pallasite rendered silver-and-black.
