31. NWA 6932 METEORITE — A COMPLETE SLICE OF AN ANOMALOUS PLESSITIC IRON METEORITE
Iron Meteorite Ungrouped – Ir-ungr
Sahara Desert / North West Africa
Found 2008 / TKW: 32 kg
Found in the Sahara Desert by Berber nomads in 2008, NWA 6932 is an extremely unusual iron meteorite. NWA 6932 is one of the few plessitic iron meteorites on record (it contains only fine grains of the chief iron alloys found in iron meteorites). Moreover, in the words of the late great Dr. John Wasson, who was the world’s foremost expert in iron meteorites, “This meteorite has no close compositional relatives.” As it does not fit into an established chemical group, this meteorite is a member of esteemed originals and is regarded as “ungrouped.” In effect, this meteorite originates from the molten core of an asteroid previously undocumented. There is no Widmanstätten pattern; only troilite and kamacitic spindles — which at times intersect — accent the cut surface. Two edges of this meteorite’s natural external surface compliment the one cut edge of this one-of-a-kind meteorite — a must for anyone whose focus is on different iron meteorite presentations.
