25. ESQUEL – RECTANGULAR POLISHED SECTION WITH EXTERIOR FACE

PAL
Chubut, Argentina (42° 54'S, 71° 20'W)
Found 1951 / TKW: 755 kg

Originating from the mantle/core boundary of an asteroid which no longer exists, pallasites are the most aesthetically dazzling meteorites and Esquel is among the most coveted pallasites. Frequently referred to as “the most beautiful meteorite in the world,” Esquel’s crystals were not heavily shocked, and as a result it has highly translucent forest-green olivine suspended in a gleaming nickel-iron matrix. Esquel often contains — and this specimen possesses — facet-grade olivine or peridot, the birthstone of August. With five cut and polished faces as well as one face featuring the meteorite’s socketed exterior surface, this specimen embodies Esquel’s most exquisite qualities — and it would prove difficult to find a more visually alluring example of a meteorite.
