18. KAPOETA — PARTIAL SLICE

Howardite
South Sudan (4° 42'N, 33° 38'E)
Fell April 22, 1942 / TKW: 11.36 kg

Howardites originate from the asteroid Vesta and are a breccia of eucritic and diogenitic components. There are only 20 witnessed howardite falls and most are unobtainable. Kapoeta fell onto a road in South Sudan near the Ugandan border on April 22, 1942 and even though its TKW is just over 11 kilograms, Kapoeta was the largest howardite fall on record until 1994. It was the amount of material disseminated which explains Kapoeta’s esteemed status in both research and as well as a cornerstone in meteorite collections throughout the world. Rarely available today, this is a select hexagonal partial slice.

47 x 27 x 4mm (1.75 x 1 x 0.1 in.) and 9.01 grams (45 carats)
