16. FELIX — PARTIAL SLICE WITH CRUST
CO3.3
Felix, Perry County, Alabama
Fell May 15,1900 / TKW: 3.2 kg
Just before noon on Tuesday, May 15, 1900, central Alabama was visited by a fireball and sonic boom. One witness described the phenomenon as “…a big piece of red-hot iron struck with a hammer, causing many sparks to fly in all directions”. Specimens were subsequently recovered in a cotton field. There are only five CO3 witnessed falls and it’s quite an exclusive club: Ornans, Lance, Moss, Warrenton and Kainsaz — and Felix is the only CO3.3 witnessed fall. Extremely rare, the TKW is just 3.2 kg, the charcoal-hued matrix of this rectangular partial slice features two exterior edges with patches of fusion crust. This specimen was deaccessioned from The Smithsonian.
