43. AL HAGGOUNIA 001 — EXOTIC FOSSIL ENSTATITE
EL
Al Haggounia, Morocco (N27°30',W12°30')
Found 2006 / TKW: 3.5 tons
Originally classified as an aubrite, in 2016 Al Haggounia 001 was reclassified as an EL chondrite impact melt. With a 40-kilometer strewn field and a TKW of more than three tons, Al Haggounia 001 is the largest enstatite event known. Al Haggounia fell approximately 23,000 years ago; given the strata in which it was suspended it has the notable designation of being a rare “fossil meteorite”. As evidenced by the large swaths of bluish-gray matrix, this specimen is less-weathered than most. Given its reduced composition, Al Haggounia 001 likely formed in the inner solar system — possibly closer to the Sun than Mercury.
