9. PEEKSKILL — A PARTIAL SLICE OF AMERICAN METEORITE LORE…WITH PAINT

H6
Peekskill, New York
Fell October 9, 1992 / TKW: 12.57 kg

On October 9, 1992, in Peekskill, New York, Michelle Knapp's parked car was struck by a 12 kg meteorite. Moments earlier the fiery descent of the Peekskill meteorite was videotaped across northeastern United States as video cameras trained on the football games being played below the Friday night lights turned skyward when the fireball rocketed across the sky. Not many meteorite falls have been caught on video — and none have been captured from as many different cities as Peekskill. Both the car and a portion of the meteorite have been on a worldwide museum tour and now offered is a superior partial slice. Peekskill’s signature filigreed shock melt courses through the matrix and a sea of minute metallic flakes. Fusion crust covers 80% of the curved rim and it features a band of red paint — the result of puncturing the trunk of Michelle’s red Chevy Malibu.
