38. OUDIYAT SBAA — SUPERLATIVE SPECIMEN OF AN EXOTIC WITNESSED FALL
EH5 – Enstatite chondrite
Oudiyat Sbaa, Morocco (25.546°N, 12.418°W)
Fell November 18, 2016 / TKW: 23.85 kg
A fireball was widely seen in Eastern Morocco the afternoon of November 18, 2016. Camel shepherds thought the sonic boom they heard was caused by a landmine triggered by a member of their herd. A search for fallen stones commenced and several days later another shepherd found three black fusion-encrusted stones near Oudiyat Sbaa. The vast majority of the TKW is contained in the main mass on display at the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum. There are only 12 EH5 meteorites on record…and only three witnessed falls. Enstatite chondrites get their name from their abundance of enstatite. They formed under conditions where there was less oxygen available than for the other chondrite groups the result of which is a metal and sulfide-rich mineralogy. Due to their highly reduced composition, they likely formed in the inner solar system — possibly even closer to the Sun than Mercury. This sample still reeks of sulfur and features bands of fusion crust and exposures of the meteorite’s matrix. Extremely difficult to obtain, this highly aesthetic specimen is in every way an outstanding example of an important meteorite.
