22. NWA 10894 PARTIAL SLICE — RARE CUMULATE EUCRITE
EUC-cm (cumulate eucrite)
Sahara Desert, Mauritania
Found 2016 / TKW 2.52 kg
While there are there are 2080 eucrites on record (as of January 20, 2026), less than 3% are cumulate eucrites, i.e., eucrites which formed from the accumulation of pyroxene and plagioclase crystals, a process which occurs more slowly and at a greater depth on Vesta than the process resulting in basaltic eucrites from surface lava flows. Several patches of fusion crust on the exterior rim circumscribe the sublime pale green pyroxene and cream-hued feldspar matrix. Exceedingly fresh, this is an unusual presentation of the asteroid Vesta. The main mass of NWA 10894 is on display at the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum.
