| Sikhote-Alin Meteorite — Unusual Complete Meteorite Iron, coarse octahedrite Maritime Territory, Siberia, Russia This animated complete specimen exhibits a variety of interesting features. There exists a concavity in the face bordered by a nearly flat rim on the right margin—evidence of where this meteorite completely split along a crystalline plane. As the reverse is smooth and exhibits flow lines, we know this sculpting occurred when the meteorite was burning through the upper atmosphere. The reverse is marked by one especially deep gouge-like structure surrounded by regmaglypts. The directional attenuation of the regmaglypts indicates this meteorite was, for at least part of its descent, oriented. Indeed, additional evidence of orientation is found at the meteorite’s base, where it is clear that rivulets of molten iron were streaming off the tip in every direction. Burnished in a natural gunmetal patina of fusion crust, this is a most appealing, pristine example from the largest meteorite shower of the last several thousand years. 49 x 39 x 27mm (2 x 1.5 x 1.0in) and 155 grams Estimate: $700 - 1,000 |
