SIKHOTE-ALIN METEORITE — METEORITE FRAGMENT FROM A LOW ALTITUDE EXPLOSION OF THE MAIN MASS

In a marked counterpoint to the previous two lots, this specimen is testament to the enormous low altitude explosion of the large Sikhote Alin mass described in lot 17. The monumental shearing force this fragment experienced is highly evident. Fluting and slits by the score are seemingly embossed on the flanged surfaces of where this meteorite was ripped apart; deep striations are observable on the reverse. With a lustrous gunmetal to charcoal patina, this fresh meteorite fragment is the substantiation of a cataclysmic event. 62 x 71 x 32mm and 295 grams.
