CAMPO DEL CIELO —
PROSAIC FIST-SIZED METEORITE
Iron, coarse octahedrite
Gran Chaco, Argentina
Iron meteorites originate from the molten iron
core of what was briefly a planet between Mars and Jupiter during the
formation of the solar system. This plantetoid (large unstable
planetary body) broke apart approximately 4.5 billions years ago and
its remnants constitute the asteroid belt. Like 99.9% of all known meteorites,
this fist-sized meteorite originates from the asteroid belt. It is a
typical iron meteorite recovered from the Campo del Cielo strewn
field (the elliptical area in which a meteorite shower is dispersed
across Earth’s surface). Surprisingly dense for its size and draped
in a chestnut to platinum patina. 119 x 111 x 109mm (4.5 x 4.25
x 4.25 inches) and 3149 grams (6.9 pounds).
