CAMPO DEL CIELO METEORITE
— SELECT FIST-SIZED METEORITE WITH HOLE
Iron, coarse octahedrite
Gran Chaco, Argentina
Campo del Cielo (“Valley of the Sky”) meteorites
were first written about in 1576 by Spanish explorers when their unearthly
origin had yet to be understood. A meteorite from Campo del Cielo was
the first large meteorite displayed at the British Museum of Natural
History, and several large “Campo” masses can be found today in the
finest museums throughout the world. The meteorite offered here features
a naturally-formed hole—a rare, sought-after attribute created, in this
instance, by terrestrialization (exposure to the elements over
thousands of years). A bright gun-metal patina accents this meteorite’s
highly textured surface. A large groove on the reverse adds further
appeal to this select representation of a historic meteorite event.
The custom pedestal depicted accompanies this specimen. 203 x 141
x 69mm (8 x 5.5 x 2.75 inches) and 7766 grams (17 pounds).
